The void between the south inner and outer walls provides ladder access to the bells and to the tower roof. The void on the north side houses the clock mechanism which drives the clock faces on the north and south walls. The clock, donated by the parish in remembrance of those who died during the First world War, is driven by two large weights which are wound to the top of the tower and provide energy to drive the clock as they fall. The clock chimes via a hammer that strikes the tenor bell every hour during the day (shown in the photograph).
