As you look round the church, you will see five Angels mounted on the walls. They were originally part of a touring exhibition of 59 Angels made by Celia Kilner of Holmfirth in West Yorkshire which was displayed here in the summer of 2009 as part of a campaign to raise funds for urgent church repairs. One very large angel was even suspended outside from the top of the church tower. The opening of the exhibition was attended by the Bishop of Hereford, and Westons created a special cider for the summer!
Inspired by paintings of Angels from different cultures and centuries, they are:
On either side of the Altar: Angel with Trumpet and Angel with Drum, both by Fra Angelico (1387-1455) from the Museum of San Marco in Florence.
Above the War Memorial: The Archangel Michael by Guariento de Arpo (1310-1370), Padua (shown here).
By the Vestry door: the large blue Angel by John Melhuish Strudwick, English Pre-Raphaelite painter 1849-1937, from a private collection.
Above the entrance to the Ringing Chamber: Trio of Angels from the early 15th Century illuminated manuscript, Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, Chateau de Chantilly, France.
These 5 Angels were generously given to Cradley church by Bill (then Churchwarden) and Georgie Buxton in 2014, and are displayed throughout the year, except during Lent.
