Cradley Church, An Historical Tour

The Shapland window

The brass plaque below the window reads: “To the Glory of God in affectionate memory of Joseph Shapland who died June 9th 1870 aged 54. Also of his wife Susannah who died April 17th 1858 aged 42 and of his 2nd wife Sarah Louisa December 15th 1864 aged 30. This window is dedicated by his brother John Shapland.” Joseph was a London barrister as well as a prominent local landowner; the family tomb is in the north churchyard.

This window depicts the spreading of the Gospel to Europe and local connections with St. James the Great and Joseph of Arimathaea. It has a symmetrical design: the bottom two panels show biblical scenes, and the top two show the figures of St. James and Joseph, each with a staff.
