Cradley Church, An Historical Tour

The Tower - more information

The tower is of three stages: the two lower stages, undivided externally, are, like the arch that separates it from the nave, thought to date from about 1200. The lower stages are built of rubble-stone, indicating that it would originally have been rendered and whitewashed, and the inner north stone face still has traces of this finish. The top stage, finished with an embattled parapet, is from the late 14th..or early 15th. century, when the large west window was also inserted. An archaeological investigation in 2010 revealed evidence of a timber floor pre-dating the plank floor that survives beneath the modern plywood covering.

Within the void between the inner and outer tower walls can be seen large scaffolding holes and remains of old rendering and whitewash, a reminder of how the interior of the church may once have looked.
