Cradley Church, An Historical Tour

The North Window - Designer and maker

The window was designed and made by A.J. Davies, stained-glass craftsman of the Bromsgrove Guild, a famous arts-and-crafts company who also made the gates of Buckingham Palace. Davies, who was born in 1887, died in 1953. He studied and later taught at the renowned Birmingham School of Art, and is described as “one of the finest stained-glass artists of the Arts and Crafts period in Britain”. He also created windows in the west walk of the cloister at Worcester Cathedral, and Stanbury Chapel in Hereford Cathedral. Davies frequently portrayed saints with the same name as a person to be commemorated, and so here we have Francis Ayscough, remembered with his parents, and St. Francis as the subject.
